Blackout: National Grid Collapses For First Time In 2025

The Nigerian national power grid has experienced its first collapse of 2025, occurring just ten days into the new year. This event has resulted in a nationwide blackout affecting numerous households and industries across the country.

Notably, this marks the thirteenth blackout within the past thirteen months. Recent data indicates a sharp decline in power generation, plummeting from 2,111.01 megawatts at 2:00 PM to just 390.20 megawatts by 3:00 PM on Saturday.

The Energy Podcast has confirmed the incident, stating, “National grid suffers major collapse… First in 2025.” Subsequent updates reported that restoration efforts are underway, with power generation reaching 302 megawatts as of 2:40 PM.

In a related event from November 2024, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported a partial disturbance in the national grid at approximately 1:52 PM. TCN General Manager for Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, explained that this disturbance was caused by a series of line and generator trippings, which contributed to the instability of the grid.

Mbah further noted that data from the National Control Centre (NCC) indicated that certain areas of the grid remained unaffected by the disruption. "TCN engineers are actively working to restore bulk power supply to the regions impacted by the partial disturbance. As of 2:49 PM, bulk power supply has been successfully restored to Abuja, and we are making progress in restoring power to other areas of the country," Mbah stated.

He concluded by expressing sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused to electricity customers during this challenging time.
