Kano Gov't Calls for Compliance: Upholding the Legitimacy of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II

The Kano State government has officially urged both public and private institutions to fully comply with the recent Court of Appeal judgment that affirmed the legitimacy of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. This call was made by the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Bar. Haruna Dederi, during a press briefing addressing the government’s stance on the ruling.

Bar. Dederi expressed that the judgment serves to vindicate the government, confirming its lawful actions concerning chieftaincy appointments and reforms within the state’s traditional institutions. He emphasized the importance of respecting and adhering to the court's decision, which recognizes Sanusi as the rightful Emir of Kano.

He stated, “The appellate court’s decision to nullify previous judgments that challenged the state’s legitimate appointments reinforces the validity of our actions and strengthens our commitment to ongoing reforms aimed at ensuring equitable representation and inclusive governance.”

He further clarified, “All decisions, pronouncements, and orders issued by the Federal High Court in Kano have been overturned by the Court of Appeal. Additionally, the law enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly regarding Emirates, along with all actions taken by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State in accordance with that law, have been fully upheld and legitimized by the Court of Appeal. Consequently, in strict adherence to the rule of law and in defense of democratic principles, it is imperative that all public and private institutions, as well as individuals, comply with the Court of Appeal's decision and act accordingly to implement the judgment effectively.”

“This ruling reaffirms the government’s dedication to justice, fairness, and adherence to due process in our efforts to modernize traditional structures while preserving the rich cultural heritage of Kano State. Furthermore, the judgment clarifies the appropriate jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, highlighting the constitutional boundaries of the courts in such affairs.”

The Kano State government extends its gratitude to the Judiciary for upholding the principles of justice and fairness. It remains committed to collaborating with traditional institutions to ensure harmony and foster development across all emirates.

Bar. Dederi concluded by urging all parties to respect the court's judgment and to collaborate with the government in promoting peace, unity, and progress in Kano State. “Let us prioritize the collective good of Kano State above all individual interests,” he stated.
